Breathe, Stretch, Race Weekend Ready!

by Mark Bailey, Certified and Registered Yoga Teacher

I’m really excited for Marathon Weekend, it's one of my favorite weekends of the year in Cleveland.

The energy before, during, and after the race is unmatched. I wanted to put together something special for race weekend this year, something that supports all the runners (and the friends/family who are along for the ride).

Marathon weekends can feel like a blur: nerves, logistics, excitement, and a whole lot of energy in the air. I love the idea of having a calm place to drop in, breathe, and feel a little more steady through it all.

I’ve always felt like yoga and running have more in common than people think. Both ask you to pay attention—especially when things get uncomfortable. In a long run you’re constantly checking in: How’s my breath? What pace can I actually hold? What do I need right now? Yoga is the same kind of conversation, just in a different format. You learn how to stay present, soften where you can, and keep going without forcing it.

One thing I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) is how much it helps to have a plan the day before a race. Not a packed schedule—more like a simple rhythm you can rely on. Eat, hydrate, move a little, get off your feet, and do something that settles your nervous system. Even a short, gentle yoga session can be the difference between feeling wound up and feeling ready.

And honestly, the day after matters just as much. After a race, it’s easy to swing between “I feel amazing!” and “why do my legs not work?” Recovery isn’t just icing and foam rolling—it’s giving your body a signal that it’s safe to relax again. Gentle stretching, restorative poses, and a little quiet time can help you come down from that race-day adrenaline and start to feel like yourself again.

The other reason I love doing something around marathon weekend is the sense of community. Running has that magical way of turning strangers into teammates, and yoga does it too. We’re all showing up with our own goals and our own stories, but we end up encouraging each other in the most natural way—sharing tips, sharing nerves, sharing the little victories.

If you’re in town for the weekend, we'd love to see you.
